Lagos - The Lagos State Government is planning a special Farewell
Ceremony to commemorate the passing of Sir Michael Agbolade Otedola.
The state said this was a way of giving a befitting honour and recognition to its former Governor, who died on May 5.
The
state government, which had earlier declared a week of mourning and the
lowering of flags at half-mast in respect of the former Governor, has
accordingly set aside next Wednesday as “Day of Tributes”, for the
recognition of the great contributions of the Epe-born politician to
Lagos State.
The programme, which will hold at Onikan Stadium,
Lagos from 1000 hours Nigeria time, is, according to the Commissioner
for Information and Strategy, Lateef Ibirogba, expected to attract
dignitaries from all walks of life, including former Governors of the
State and notable eminent personalities across the country.
A
statement by the Commissioner stated that the former Governor would lie
in state at his Epe residence next Thursday while a Christian wake- keep
would hold at the same venue that afternoon.
The late
octogenarian would be buried on Friday, after a funeral mass /rites at
the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ibowon, at 1100 hrs, after
which guests would be hosted at a reception at St. Patrick’s Grammar
School, Eredo.
The Commissioner enjoined Lagosians and Nigerians
to support the state government in giving befitting respect and honour
to the departed leader.
Otedola, a former journalist, PR consultant and politician extra-ordinarie, was the second civilian governor of Lagos State.
He was in office from 1991 to 1992.
